Shawn Paget

There’s one thing that Shawn Paget knows for sure – farming is in his blood. He and his wife, Natalie, took over her father’s farm in 2013 to become the 3rd generation. Shawn, a farm boy in his own right, grew up growing vegetables and raising beef cattle with his father. Now, their son, Oliver, is showing interest in farming, too.

“He thinks it’s fun,” explains Shawn. “He drives almost everything; tractors, 4-wheelers, you name it.”

When it comes to doing work on the farm, Shawn is very hands-on. He oversees and manages everything and is a self-proclaimed workaholic. “You have to be, to be a farmer,” says Shawn, grinning.

Within the past 10 years, Shawn has worked hard to double the size of the farm. He takes a great sense of pride in what he produces, knowing that he’s putting a quality product on the shelf. He likes doing his own farm trials, too.

“Our growing conditions change a lot in 10 miles,” says Shawn, “they can be totally different depending on where you are.” To help manage the different conditions on his acreage, Shawn tracks his results in different areas and compares it to data from past seasons. By using precision farming concepts with his own field data, he’s able to make more informed decisions for the future.

Part of Shawn’s on-farm trials also include DEKALB® Market Development plots. He likes seeing the results of different varieties side by side, and monitoring their performance.

He also keeps a watchful eye over his DEKALB® 25-10RY soybeans. “They’ve become a staple on the farm,” says Shawn.

In Shawn’s experience, what he likes about them in particular is their excellent quality, tonnage, and the impressive yield potential.

“And every year, we try to push their yield potential a little higher,” Shawn says with a twinkle in his eye.

He has also been growing DEKALB® Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® soybeans for two years now and is pleased with the performance of DKB008-81 soybeans thus far.

The Pagets also grow grain corn. Shawn looks for yield potential, bushel weight, heat units, and rotation when making his decision on what hybrids to grow. He also looks for advice from his DEKALB® Dealer, Cedric MacLeod. He appreciates that Cedric understands his needs, and how the products can fit with his crops and rotation.

“Basically what it boils down to is that I’ve got a dealer that’s willing to work with me,” says Shawn. “That dealer chain of support is valuable.”

When Shawn isn’t farming, he and wife Natalie are busy running Oliver to basketball and baseball practices. As the farm continues to grow, he’s hopeful that Oliver will one day take it over.

“I’m hoping, but I’m not going to push,” he says, smiling. Shawn and Natalie just hope their son ends up loving his career, whatever that may be. But it sure would be convenient if it involved driving a tractor.

We thank Shawn and Natalie for choosing DEKALB® brand seed for their farm and wish their entire family & operation a safe and successful harvest this year and for many years to come. Check out the results of the Paget’s and other farmer-managed Market Development trials on this fall.
